When you read the word ‘unbroken’ on the EP cover you might think it’s about resilience, but it couldn't be further from the truth. in fact, it's about the opposite.
Unbroken: not the state of never being broken, but the process of being remade. This EP is about renewal, reinvention, looking forwards, embracing what you never thought was previously possible. I started with the title track, and the main synth hook. I looked around for rhythms that sounded tactile and delicate. I wanted this to be a track where the elements gradually gather together to create a unified sound. For the other tracks, I went down the rabbit hole of un- words that don’t necessarily have a negative meaning; I settled with the track names before starting to write and record, in an attempt to reflect those meanings. What followed was what happens a lot in my releases: a winding road, a journey; I love any opportunity to tell stories through music. For the concept of being unbroken, that process of being remade, I felt it needed a context; to build towards being unbroken I felt gave it meaning and purpose. And the final track ‘Uncharted’ gives that extra context of things not being the same, a fresh start. |
